Kensei Amagiri is the main male protagonist of DxD - The Last Amagiri. He is the surviving heir of the Amagiri Clan, a renown clan that served the Shinto Gods. Kensei is the first son of Tetsuo Uesugi and sole son of both his first love and previous rival, Sakura Amagiri; also the older half-brother of Naoto and Nariko Uesugi.

After the death of his mother, Kensei became close to both Claire Belial and Alice Evangelista who lives with him in his hometown. He is a second-year student in Kibou Academy in Class 2-D and the Public Morals Committee's Captain.

Appearance

Kensei Amagiri age 16.

At the start, at age ten, Kensei was a black-haired, gray-eyed child of average height, who's described as having unkempt hair and eyes radiating fighting spirit. After training with Sun Wukong for a month, his physique became more toned, in addition to having a notable scar on his left side caused from one of Alice's monsters. Because of Hagun Island's treatment, he was forced to wear light clothing that provided little protection. However, having left, he switched to wearing normal clothing, consisting of a black unbuttoned gakuran school blazer, a blue shirt that his name's kanji on it, black trousers, and sneakers.

Proceeding the next three years, at thirteen, his hair became far spikier with small bangs in front of his forehead, and Kensei's overall physique has been developed from additional conditioning training, something that Yasaka pointed out. Freed from Hagun Island, he begun wearing normal clothing: among them being their Seika Middle School uniform, consisting of a dark blue gakuran blazer with their emblem, a white short-sleeved shirt, dark blue trousers, and black sneakers.

At age sixteen, Kensei matured into a young man of average height for that age, attaining a well-built and defined from daily training, which Alice described as being close to perfection for a swordsman. After being enrolled into Kibou Academy, his high school uniform consists of a white tailored blazer with black accent and their emblem on the front, a black button-up dress shirt, black tie, trousers, and dress shoes; in addition to this, he wears a black and red armband on his right arm with "Vice-Captain" embroiled on it in Kanji. He often carries around Kurogane inside a black sword bag, which has the Amagiri Clan emblem designed on it.

At age seventeen, he has grown into a handsome young man, and his hair growing out more, but remains short, and kept well-groomed. Because of Kensei's special conditioning training, he developed a lean and toned body, described as perfect for him: his height reaches [172 cm; (5ft. 8 inch)], and his weight reached [67 kg; (140 lbs)]. Post and Pre-timeskip, his eyes often shines blue based on the situation at hand, most of the time whenever his emotions and/or powers activates. Outside of their school uniform, Kensei would often wear the uniforms created for the Kibou Alliance, resembling an agency uniform, which has a mixture of black and blue with their emblem on it. He later started wearing a Jade Dragon pendant gifted to him from Sun Wukong, and it often radiates a dragon aura.

Personality

Overall, Kensei has shown to be rather friendly and close to his family and friends, including all of the people he's encountered on Hagun Island, despite being able to escape from the island, he returned a month later to assist in their escape. Though, he can also become rather overprotective to those who Kensei's particularly closer to such as Claire Belial, who he didn't want entering the Gehenna Tournament despite knowing her potential, but realizing that she could be sold off as a slave.

Befitting his lineage from the Amagiri and Uesugi Clans, Kensei is confident and noble, being able to maintain his composure even against the most dangerous monsters as a child. If he's in a fight, then he won't hesitate to take lighter injuries if it means that he can keep himself from suffering heavier damage as initially shown in Volume 01, during his fight against a manticore. Kensei also has strong moral principals, never steering away from a fight no matter the opponent or how dangerous the situation at hand, as such, if there's someone who has been wronged in some way or if his friends have been wounded either physically or emotionally, he won't hesitate to act.

He holds a great deal of pride in his lineage, not wanting to use the Amagiri-ryuu in "illegal competitions" or even as a means to prove his superiority to others. Although, Kensei does desire to challenge strong opponents to test and improve his skills as a martial artist, which has often caused people to refer to him as a battle maniac, but he would never force someone to fight him if they don't want to. Despite being known as a battle maniac, his friends and those close to them realize that he is honest about fighting to the point of almost being childish, which mostly sparks his irritation or discomfort if someone points it out. He never discriminates against people based on things such as their gender or strength and fights them regardless as long as they had the will to stand up and fight.

Alice and Claire have described that at times, he can at times be dimwitted when it concerns dealing with women and unknowledgeable about their feelings towards him, which is due to his focus sometimes being directed more toward fighting and martial arts rather than his love life. But, as Kensei started growing up, he started to become more conscious about women, often becoming flushed when caught in an embarrassing situation such as finding Alice or Hisui sleeping in his bed without much concern about being seen barely dressed and when being teased by mature women such as Yasaka.

Due to his overall kindness and moral principals, he can become irritated about those who misuses their powers and reign against those without either, primarily against the High-Class and Old Devils, as well as those who're apart of the Five Principal Clans who mistreat their unfortunate members. As such, he considered them as nothing more than scumbags and doesn't bother holding back his tongue against them no matter who was inside of the room with him at the time. Tetsuo stated that he treasures his friends and loved one as a dragon loves treasures, and he would pursue those who harms his loved ones no matter their position or status.

Sun Wukong noted that because he began spending too time around Yu-Long, Kensei has became somewhat of a wisecracker, often making jokes, and even mocking others, which was first shown during his confrontation with Niðhöggr.

History

Kensei is the sole son of Sakura and Tetsuo, a descendant of their clans, but raised in the Amagiri Clan, as such, he grew up in Kibou Town. His childhood friend is Minako Kushihashi who lived in the same town who he'd often spent the most time around. On his 5th birthday, he was almost possessed by a powerful evil spirit, but forced it out, but couldn't exorcise it before escaping and met Futsunushi. He later proposed to Minako during a summer festival after hearing that he needed to marry someone.

A year later, he and Minako met Meiko Himejima, finding out that she couldn't handle her power and was planned on being married off, then Kensei proposed to her after befriending her and sharing the same dreams as Minako. A week later, she and her brother died after Meiko lost control over her powers and set their home ablaze, which saddened them, causing them to make a promise of not seeing one another until Minako had fulfilled their dream of becoming an idol in ten years.

Several months later, spending time at his father's home and playing with his 2yrs old brother, all the children and teens in the Amagiri Clan vanished, leaving Kensei as the survivor among his generation. Thus stirring emotions from all the parents, causing them to search all across Japan. Soon enough, all of the adults aside from Sakura were killed leaving her and her son as sole survivors, stirring her desires to train Kensei more in the Amagiri-ryuu to prepare for what might arrive.

A year later, he and his mother went to Urakyoto, where he met Kunou, who was traveling around Kyoto without guards and ended up saving her from a dangerous situation. During the time spent together and after returning to Urakyoto, it progressed to Kensei proposing to Kunou right in front of Sakura and Yasaka, much to their surprise and delight. At some point, Kensei and Minako played in a park together after hearing that her mother planned on moving to another home, where she vowed to see him again when she fulfilled her dream of becoming an idol.

At 8yrs old, Kensei was kidnapped and brought to Hagun Island on a route to visit his father, but his mother tried to rescue him fighting against all the Gehenna Guards before reaching Hayashi. But, is killed despite almost killing blind swordsman because several old devils used Kensei as a distraction, which had made him the Last Amagiri.

Powers and Abilities

Overall Abilities: Kensei inherited prodigious talent, learning things he shouldn't have until his teens, considered the best among the Golden Generation. He haven't lost in the Gehenna Tournament for 2 years, becoming rustier from not using his inherited powers, however, Sun Wukong's training fixed it, making him strong enough to defeat trained Gehenna Guards and their leader. At 13, he could fend off David and Freed, then killed the Demon Eater; at 16, he fought Brynhildr for a time, then helped kill Niðhöggr and bested Ewald Cristaldi. At 17, as a Master and Number, Kensei is one of the Kibou Alliance's strongest combatants and leaders, he fought on par with Cao Cao and Lu Lingqi, then killed Kokabiel without getting serious. He survived fighting Arata, the Ordinal 01, who received some of the Primordial God's divinity and even damaged him.

Amatsu-Mikaboshi views Kensei as the perfect host and threat, having resisted the Primordial God's attempt to possess him at age 5 and without side-effects, even sealing some of his latent powers. After training in Shiamano for three weeks over the summer, his development stunned Kuroka and Bikou.

Immense Spiritual Power: As a member of the Golden Generation and the Amagiri Clan Heir, Kensei was born with strong spiritual power. It is first noted as he could use high-level techniques at the age of 10, then an Ougi at 13, all while wielding Kurogane, a gluttonous Houtou, but this required aid to manifest. Becoming a Master and Number, Kensei's spiritual power is described as being much superior to High-Class Devils, having great enough control to use complex techniques without much exertion. Freed from Amatsu-Mikaboshi's seal and then training in Shiamano, it increased, to the point of releasing such a presence it'd surprised Kuroka and Bikou, comparing it to a Dragon.

Ki: Among the Golden Generation, Kensei had the highest amount of Ki and talent using it, but this was gravely lessened from unuse for two years. Sun Wukong's training mended that, accomplishing all the same things which he could do beforehand, but much better from learning Senjutsu. As a Master, he it became considerable enough that neither Ginkaku or Kinkaku doubted Kensei was their former foe's disciple. His training in Shiamano afforded him a greater comprehension of Ki, to where it doesn't leak out.

• Dragon Ki: A special Ki, the "power of a Dragon", dismal, at first, because of Amatsu-Mikaboshi's seal. It almost overflowed from Kensei, once freed, feeling different from the dragon power that Wu Jun gained from consuming Shanlong's heart.

Senjutsu Master: Kensei proved to have a natural aptitude for Senjutsu, having learned it from Sun Wukong and is compatible with the Amagiri Clan's inherit powers. He can strengthen himself using Ki, sense auras, target an opponent's organs and spirit, and hide his presence from others. Kensei mastered Senjutsu, to the point of being capable of manipulating nature and learn the Sennin's original abilities. It's proven possible for him to hide from Kuroka and Bikou, two talented Senjutsu users, who didn't even notice him until he revealed himself.

• Touki (闘気(とうき), Fighting Spirit): He can cover himself in Touki, increasing his offense, defense, and speed; it can also be applied in his swords. Instead of outright shrouding himself in an aura of ki, he developed a method of concentrating ki inside of himself.
• Healing (治癒(ちゆ), Chiyu): A technique that increases one's natural regeneration and blood circulation, being the sole means of replenishing stamina. Kensei learned to control someone else's Ki, to the point where it became possible to isolate and extract the light poisoning Ravel, while healing her at the same time; then adding in the Fire Element, showing that he can mix the other Five Elements too. It could heal a person's mind and soul, something which grants them a pleasant and calming sensation, often doing do whenever giving women massages.
  • Bouchujutsu (房中術(ぼうちゅうじゅつ), Bedroom Method): The most efficient Healing method performed during sex, differing between men and women. Unlike women, if men uses Bouchujutsu, their Ki, instead of being "shared" is "joined" with their partner(s), causing both parties to be healed at an explosive rate. It was noted by Hisui that it can be used to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Kensei pointed out that energy builds up at certain points, once pressed spreads outwards, then once both resonates, it would end up overflowing within both parties, causing them to become energized.
• Purification (浄化(じょうか), Jōka): He is adept at purifying both evil spirits and demons, which was honed further after learning Senjutsu.
• Sealing (封緘(ふうかん), Fūkan): A practical ability, which allows him seal a person's life-force, and thus, it can seal souls too. He used this for the first time to seal the soul of the Cadre, Kokabiel, after killing him inside of a gem as punishment.
• Telekinesis (念力(ね ん り き), Nenriki): One of the advanced Sennin abilities he learned, which allows him to move and control things without touching them. Although, he's still practicing this, he often uses it to either retrieve or control his weapons without touching them and stopping bullets.
• Haki (覇気(はき), Supreme Spirit): An advanced technique, derived from Touki, where instead of shrouding him in Ki, Kensei instead manipulates and channels Ki through himself. As such, Haki strengthens himself in an optimum and efficient manner, without wasting Ki. If Spiritual power is channeled, the fusion produces power greater than either alone, which empowers techniques and generates black flashes.

Elemental Manipulation: As a member of the Amagiri Clan, Kensei can create and control elements related to the Five Phases. He favors Wood, Fire, and Metal, but from mastering Senjutsu, learning to "be one with nature", he became comfortable using Earth and Water. In addition to this, Kensei is able to also strengthen them through using natural Ki, similar to the Sacred Beasts' hosts.

Special Physique: Inheriting Evil Dragon blood influenced his body, down to his soul from birth, despite being a child, he survived things that an adult couldn't. Honed from rigorous training, to the point of being superhuman, it matches Devil; having a heightened metabolism and can recover from things much faster than normal. Drinking a perfected Sennin Elixir removed the impurities from and strengthened Kensei's physique, down to the meridians and dragon blood.

Immense Strength: He has above-average strength since childhood, tossing around grown men and can swing his sword with enough force to wound monsters. Sun Wukong's month-long training honed his strength, to where Kensei could damage armored Gehenna Guards, armed or unarmed, then fought against Hayashi, who attained multiple cybernetic implants. His rigorous training since then has made him strong enough that he could surpass Riser, matched Hakki, and blocked Kokabiel's light weapons without strain.

Immense Speed: He has been fast and agile enough to match monsters as a child, being able to dodge bullets from the Gehenna Guard's modified firearms. His honed natural speed and relaxes, combined with Shinsoku has allowed him to match that of Ewald wielding Excalibur Rapidly. Kensei is noted as being able to keep up with fast opponents such as Cao Cao, reacting to his spear and performing acrobatic feats.

Immense Durability: He has shown to have a high tolerance to pain and damage, able to withstand injuries and strikes that would have crippled most humans from monsters such as a manticore despite being a child. Kensei's training with Sun Wukong has built up his bodies' toughness and through using Senjutsu, he can further enhance it to where he can withstand bullets. His pain tolerance has later proven as he could endure his arms' skins being melted from Niðhöggr's miasma. Kensei is durable enough to take a blast and slashes from the True Longinus, continuing to fight against Cao Cao undeterred.

• Poison Resistance: Kensei developed has a high resistance to poisonous substances from his rigorous training; most notable as he endured the worse of Niðhöggr's miasma, something that Brynhildr states as remarkable in itself. Claire commented that normal poisons wouldn't be enough to deter Kensei, and that it'd take more potent and supernatural ones to deter him.
• Elemental Resistance: In learning to become one with nature and rigorous training, Kensei developed a high degree of elemental resistance, enduring ones such as fire and lightning without the usual damage.

Immense Stamina: His high stamina and endurance lets him fight monsters for a longer period than most, which allowed him to endure multiple injuries from light arrows, fractured ribs, while still defeating Jason. Minutes later, Kensei survived a savage beating from two Gehenna Guards, and assailed with Fire Magic, despite being at the brink of death. Kensei's rigorous conditioning since then has continued to improve his stamina and endurance to superhuman levels, allowing him to fight for several hours without exhaustion. It was most noted when he fought against Cao Cao and Lingqi, the latter fought for almost an entire day, enduring powerful blows from one another before falling down exhausted.

Extrasensory Perception: As a member of the Amagiri Clan, Kensei has a natural aptitude for seeing, sensing, and touching supernatural beings and phenomena. As first shown when he grabbed an Evil Spirit at age 1, then began manhandling it. It increased from learning Senjutsu, reacting to and perceiving immediate dangers, as first shown when Kensei reacted to Niðhöggr preparing to release miasma, despite not previously knowing about it. It became possible to sense Regulus was a Longinus the moment he saw him, rather than a Nemean Lion.

Master Martial Artist: A talented and formidable martial artist, having trained in the Amagiri-ryuu from childhood, let him defeat adults, monsters, and spirits unarmed. Kensei learned advanced techniques that he wouldn't have until becoming a teenager, becoming performing in multiple weapons, having no issue in wielding either of them. Without the Amagiri-ryuu, he'd killed monsters in the Gehenna Tournament for 2 years, while making it difficult to compared to before. Kensei learned 3 Chinese Kenpo basics from Sun Wukong, then started using the Amagiri-ryuu, becoming versatile enough to defeat multiple Gehenna Guard alone. At 16, his improved strength and skills allowed him to fight Ewald, besting the Veteran Exorcist as a pure swordsman. Kensei soon advanced to Master, building up a strong foundation to develop his own martial art and technique; based on, acting with little force and effort, thus fighting with close to zero-waste, impressing Sairaorg and Lingqi.

• Amagiri-ryuu (天霧流(あまきり りゅう), Heavenly Mist Style): An ancient martial art taught in the Amagiri Clan, Kensei, in particular trained in swordsmanship. Aside from this, he had learned a multitude of different melee styles, armed styles, and spells making himself more versatile. As such, his techniques all revolves around ones able to defeat demons, spirits, youkai, and dragons in combat.
• Chinese Kenpo: Kensei learned the fundamentals behind three Chinese martial arts from Sun Wukong, ranging from: Hakkyokuken and Hikaken, both focuses on explosive power, one focusing in short-ranged, whereas the other is long-ranged. And Hakkeshou focuses on circular movements, building up centrifugal force, using it to move and "flow" in and out of attacks through dynamic footwork, being a mix of offensive and defensive. Despite not learning except for the basics, Kensei trained in these compatible martial arts, to the point of total refinement, achieving total comprehension and a strong foundation.
  • True Dragon Style (真龍形(しんりゅう かた), Shinryū Kata): A self-styled martial art based off of the real-life Dragon Style, something which Kensei developed himself after spending a month with the Dragon King, Yu-Long. It is far more realistic and efficient, having been created from emulating an actual Eastern Dragon. True Dragon Style too focuses on the total comprehension of movements, including kicks, sweeps, strikes, locks, and takedowns, most notably open-hand attacks which mimics a Dragon's claws. Despite the great strength behind them, the motions are fast, flowing and subtle, rather than seeming to be either forceful or exerting oneself, seeming to almost control the opponent's actions too. Same as the other three Chinese Kenpo, Kensei used this one as the foundation for the Tougen Amagiri-ryuu.
• Tougen Amagiri-ryuu (桃源 天霧 流(とうげん あまきり りゅう), Paradise Heavenly Mist Style): His personal variation of the Amagiri-ryuu, incorporating what he learned from Sun Wukong onto it, then modeled after an Eastern Dragon. As per his main preference, it puts an emphasis on swordsmanship, based on wielding either one, two, and three swords. Aside from this, it includes other styles arts, such as melee and staff techniques, something that he uses to an excellent extent. Attributed to Senjutsu, Tougen Amagiri-ryuu emphasizes advanced Ki and Elemental Manipulation, using techniques in a more fluid and efficient manner.
• Master Swordsman: A talented swordsman who trained in the Amagiri-ryuu, Kensei learned to kill spirits and monsters. His normal swordsmanship alone was honed from fighting against monsters from inside of the Gehenna Tournament for two years, in addition to Sun Wukong's month-long training. It made it much easier to combat more experienced master swordsmen, such as Hayashi Namekaze at age 10. At 13, he could use the Amagiri-ryuu better than before, countering Freed and David, then killed the Demon Eater. As time passed, Kensei became a powerful and versatile swordsman, from inventing the Tougen Amagiri-ryuu, clashing against Cao Cao head-on.
  • Three Sword Style (三刀流(さ んとう りゅう), Santōryū): A particular sword style developed from emulating Roronoa Zoro, one of his favorite characters from One Piece on a dare. As such, Kensei wields two swords in each hand and one in his mouth. Despite being irregular and unrealistic, he has proven himself more than capable of replicating the same techniques, even making it usable in real combat. Soon enough, it reached the point where his mastery didn't differ much from One or Two Sword Styles.
• Master Staffmanship: He also trained in wielding a bō staff from the Amagiri-ryuu, though Kensei wasn’t as adept in wielding it compared to his sword. He was skilled enough to defend himself from Claire's wind blades, then used a technique. He improved his staffmanship through training under Sun Wukong, who instructed him in the same fighting style that resembles his. Against Kokabiel, Kensei deflected all the light spears he fired at him effortlessly.

Keen Intellect: He can be perceptive and clever, despite his reckless nature, being knowledge in about anything related to Shintoism. Earlier on, Kensei learned advanced techniques and abilities that he wouldn't have until his teens. Because of Sun Wukong's and Xuanzang Sanzang's influence, he became a far more patient and location person, knowledgeable in cultures and languages. In terms of combat, it'd allowed Kensei to master different martial arts and developed the Dragon Style from observing Yu-Long. Most notable, he advanced to Master himself in just a year, learning from the Amagiri Clan's manuals.

• Master Technician: Kensei is a Technique-Type who seeks to polish and master his powers and skills, in addition to his martial arts, letting him deal with opponents in a more efficient manner. He can also create newer techniques based off what he learned from the Amagiri-ryuu and Chinese Kenpo.
• Skilled Adviser: Since he received instruction from masters such as his mother, Sun Wukong, Xuanzang Sanzang, he learned varied methods in training others. It was noted as he helped train the children living in Kibou Town, most of them wields sacred gears or other powers. Because he continued training in both the Amagiri-ryuu and Chinese Kenpo, Kensei also experimented with different training regimens that focuses on training one's physical constitution, even coming up with different exercises that fits a specific person.

Expert Magician: Kensei is skilled in the Eastern Magic of Shintoism, having learned spells among the Amagiri Clan and create protective barriers able to defend himself from a dragon's assault. He can store items inside of a separate dimension and summon them back when needed. Kensei began learning more advanced spells among the Amagiri Clan in order to improve his overall combat prowess.

Flight: He practiced to gain the natural ability to levitate and fly, through virtue of his innate dragon blood from an Asian Dragon, which he achieved in Shiamano.

Equipment

Kurogane (黒鉄(くろがね ), Black Iron): His first and main weapon, a Niryuu Kaitou, that has a black blade, which has been noted as being able to clash against legendary weapons such as Galatine and the True Longinus without it being damaged. It can absorb its wielder's powers, taking on the same properties as those powers, making Kurogane a perfect sword meant for the Amagiri-ryuu. Kensei has gained proper control over its absorption trait to the point of being able to absorb the powers from allies.
